Backbeat Collective – Why We Do What We Do!

Our Ethos

When I first started Backbeat Collective, I knew I wanted it to be more than just a place where people learn scales or songs. For me, music has always been about connection, confidence, and creativity.

That’s the heart of our ethos: we don’t just teach an instrument in isolation — we teach how to play with others, in a band, in a way that feels real. Because music isn’t just about notes on a page. It’s about energy, teamwork, and those unforgettable moments when someone steps on stage and surprises even themselves with what they can do.

What We Believe In

At Backbeat, there are a few things we hold close:

  • Learning in context – Music makes the most sense when it’s experienced together. Playing in a band helps students develop timing, listening, and teamwork alongside their instrument skills.

  • Confidence through performance – I’ve seen time and again how stepping onto a stage can transform someone’s confidence. It’s powerful, no matter your age.

  • Community matters – We’re not just a music school; we’re part of the wider music community. Through our outreach, gigs, and festival work, we create opportunities that connect people.

  • Growth at every stage – Whether you’re a complete beginner or aiming for a career in music, I believe everyone should have the chance to grow musically and personally.

What We Offer

🎸 Adult Band SkillsSo many adults say they wish they’d learned an instrument or had the chance

to play in a band. Our sessions make that possible. We help you get confident on your instrument while rehearsing and performing with others — no pressure, just the joy of making music together.

🏠 Home Education Music Hub I’m especially proud of this. It’s a daytime hub for home-educated students to learn guitar, bass, drums, and vocals in a really supportive environment. It’s not just lessons — it’s about making friends, building confidence, and learning the skills that come from playing in a band. Soon, we’ll also be offering GCSE Music.

🎶 Saturday Music – Ages 9+ For younger musicians starting out, this is the place to begin. We make learning fun while teaching the basics of live performance. It’s incredible to watch their faces light up the first time they play together as a band.

🎤 Saturday Music – Ages 16+This is for those who are ready to take things up a notch. We treat these sessions like band rehearsals — developing real-world skills, building stage presence, and performing live. For anyone who’s serious about their music, this is a brilliant step forward.

For me, Backbeat has always been about giving people the chance to feel the music and live the moment. Watching someone step onto a stage for the first time, or finally nail that song they’ve been practising, is honestly the best part of what we do.

👉 If this sounds like the right place for you or your family, come and be part of it.

What Our Students & Others Say

Pete Friesen

The Almighty, Alice Cooper

I've been playing with Jon for over 20 years now and he is one of the most naturally talented drummers I have ever worked with. His subtly of touch and musical instincts are fantastic, and his innate groove makes him a joy to play with. You know you're in safe hands when he is behind the kit.
